JAKARTA - The private secondary school Otani Junior and Senior High School in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, confirmed that the four Japanese tourists who went viral for allegedly stealing in Bali were students from the school.
Through an official statement on the school's website, the Otani Junior and Senior High School apologized and confirmed the theft incident committed by a number of students while on a school trip to Bali from November 30 to December 5, 2025.
"This incident is not only a problem that requires serious consideration for the victims, but also a serious action that has the potential to affect Japanese citizens overseas. We are aware of the need to seriously review how we guide our students," the school said in a statement quoted by The Japan Times, Friday, December 12.
This case has become a public concern after a video widely circulated on the social media X showed four Japanese nationals being caught on surveillance cameras while stealing clothes at a store in Bali. The recording is known to have appeared after the store owner realized that merchandise was missing.
The school also appealed to the public not to speculate or spread unverified information, including the identity, name, and photos of the students involved.
English:
"We ask all parties to refrain from disseminating information that may be slanderous, because these actions can actually worsen the situation and harm the parties involved," the school wrote.
Otani Junior and Senior High School confirmed that it is currently reviewing all facts related to the incident and will consider the appropriate handling steps in accordance with the rules and responsibilities of educational institutions.
