TSUKIMICHI -Moonlit Fantasy- Season 2

TSUKIMICHI -Moonlit Fantasy- is a Japanese light novel series written by Kei Azumi.

The story follows Makoto Misumi, an ordinary high school student who is suddenly transported to another world as a "hero."

However, the goddess of this world finds him unattractive and banishes him to the farthest edges of the land.

Gifted with extraordinary powers by a different god, Makoto embarks on an unpredictable adventure, surrounded by powerful and eccentric companions, in a world filled with various races, gods, and magic.

The series has spawned manga, anime adaptations, and games, winning the hearts of isekai fans worldwide for its blend of comedy, action, and fresh approach to fantasy tropes.

Background of Creation

Kei Azumi started writing TSUKIMICHI -Moonlit Fantasy- on the web novel platform Shousetsuka ni Narou in 2012.

The author was inspired by a wave of web novels, especially the isekai genre, taking cues from works like "A Harem in the Fantasy World Dungeon" and "Ideal Sponger Life."

Azumi deliberately included elements of "old-school" humor and structure, influenced by the manga "GS Mikami, Ghost Sweeper."

Rather than making the protagonist a typical handsome hero, Azumi wanted to explore how an average-looking character could shine in a fantasy world.

Tomoe's love for period dramas stems from Azumi’s own fondness for historical shows.

The series became a hit on the web, won a reader’s choice award from AlphaPolis, and quickly expanded into print, manga, and anime.

Worldbuilding

The story is set in a fantasy world filled with swords, magic, and a complex, goddess-centric society.

The land is home to multiple races: Humans (called "Hyuman" in-world), demi-humans, monsters, dragons, gods, and spirits.

The goddess, obsessed with beauty, showers her blessings only on Hyumans she deems attractive.

Other races, including demi-humans and dragons, are marginalized.

Makoto is thrown into this harsh world’s "edge," only to find himself among communities of outcasts and powerful mythical creatures, such as dragons and ancient warriors.

The larger world map loosely echoes the shape of Japan, with the central Hyuman countries involved in conflicts and discrimination fueled by the goddess's favoritism.

Plot

Makoto Misumi, a teenager from a five-member family, is summoned as a hero to a fantasy world due to a contract his parents made before his birth.

Instead of being welcomed, Makoto is insulted and banished by the world's only goddess for being "ugly."

Before this, the god Tsukuyomi grants him powers that dwarf even the goddess’s blessings.

Freed from the limitations of Earth, Makoto discovers his physical and magical abilities far surpass those of the average resident in this world.

Thrown into a barren wasteland, Makoto befriends demi-human outcasts and legendary beings: Tomoe (a dragon obsessed with Japanese period dramas), Mio (a former "calamity spider" with a love for food and cooking), and Shiki (a lich with a scholarly streak).

Makoto’s extraordinary magical strength attracts followers and enemies alike.

He creates a thriving demi-human settlement in a separate dimension called "Asora."

Despite attempts to interact peacefully with the human society, Makoto faces continuous discrimination and mistrust, often due to his appearance and overpowering presence.

His journey puts him in the crossfire between different races, warring nations, and even gods, leading him on a quest filled with battles, political intrigue, hilarious misunderstandings, and genuinely heartfelt moments.

Key Characters

  • Makoto Misumi: The protagonist, an archery club vice-captain with overwhelming magical power and a kind (albeit increasingly cynical) personality.
  • Tomoe Misumi: The first follower, formerly the mist dragon "Shin," obsessed with Makoto’s memories and old Japanese dramas.
  • Mio Misumi: The second follower, once feared as the "Calamity Spider," now dedicated to cooking for Makoto.
  • Shiki Misumi: The third follower, a former lich, joining Makoto after being bested in combat.
  • Hibiki Otonashi: One of two other Japanese heroes summoned by the goddess, a determined and righteous swordswoman.
  • Tomoki Iwahashi: The other Japanese hero, whose initially pure heart is easily corrupted by the goddess’s favoritism and his own powers.

Terminology Explanation

Goddess

Bestows blessings only on those she finds attractive, leading to deep-seated discrimination.

Asora (Alternate Space)

A different dimension created by Tomoe, developed by Makoto as a sanctuary for his followers and various demi-humans.

Hyuman

The primary human-like race, favored by the goddess, with societal structures reinforcing beauty as the highest value.

Blessings and Curses

Divine powers and protections distributed according to the goddess’s whims, often shaping the fate of entire nations and races.

“Understanding” Ability

Makoto’s unique gift from the goddess allows him to communicate with every race except for Hyumans using their languages but not the common human tongue, forcing him to learn it from scratch.
